Jim Cannon, Chief Executive Officer, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) has  unveiled a new all-in-one website for information sharing on aquaculture improvement projects (AIPs), the AIP Directory.  This is a dedicated platform for information on aquaculture improvement projects (AIPs) around the world. It is now possible to explore active AIPs, view report progress, and find useful resources on AIP implementation. Currently, these are as follows:
  • The Bac Lieu Shrimp AIP in Vietnam covers black tiger shrimp farming. With the Quyet Tam cooperative shrimp group, the aim is to increase market recognition of responsible shrimp farming. It verifies extensive shrimp farming in the form of rice-shrimp rotating cultivation to the Asian Seafood Improvement Collaborative (ASIC) Shrimp protocol. It is supported by  ICAFIS, the Bac Lieu extension center and the Asian Seafood Improvement Collaborative (ASIC).
  • Hainan Tilapia Sustainability Alliance in China works with China Blue Sustainability Institute. The mission is to build a safe, green and efficient model of tilapia farming. It wants to reposition Hainan tilapia as a regional brand and direct the industry towards sustainable development.
  • PT ATINA Sidoarjo Ecoshrimp AIP in East Java, Indonesia also works on black tiger shrimp farming. The aim is to increase market recognition of responsible shrimp farming by verifying extensive shrimp farming to the ASIC Shrimp protocol. This is via the collaboration between local farmers and traders, a processing plant PT. Aler Trade Indonesia (PT ATINA) and support from the Department of Fisheries in Sidoarjo (Balai Besar Perikanan Budidaya Air Pau Jepara) and the Asian Seafood Improvement Collaborative.
  • Shrimp Health Resources Improvement Project (SHRImp) – Chumphon, Thailand.
  • Shrimp Health Resources Improvement Project (SHRImp) – Rayong, Thailand.
  • Shrimp Health Resources Improvement Project (SHRImp) – Surat Thani, Thailand.

These three AIPs use a scalable and transferable model to improve profitability and attract investment into the shrimp industry – through better governance and farm management that reduce risks, improve productivity and protect natural resources. It provides shrimp farmers with tools to improve their productivity.

  • Shrimp Improvement Program (SIP) in East Java, Indonesia provides practical training to farmers, other businesses, and regulators on how to use innovative tools to improve water quality and reduce disease risks at the farm and production area-levels. The AIP will initially focus on shrimp production in Banyuwangi, East Java, but will promote lessons learned with other areas.
  • South Sulawesi ASIC Ecoshrimp operates in Lanrisang District, Pinrang Regency, Indonesia. The aim is to increase the market recognition of responsible shrimp farming by verifying extensive shrimp farming to the ASIC Shrimp protocol. This will be achieved via a collaboration between local farmers and traders, PT ATINA. It is supported by the local department of fisheries (Dinas Kelautan dan Perikanan Kabupaten Pinrang.
