Iran’s Fisheries Organization (IFO) has planned for an annual production of 130,000 tonnes of shrimp by the Iranian calendar year 1404 (March 2025-March 2026), an official with the organisation announced to the Tehran Times.

Morteza Afrasiabi, the acting head of the IFO’s fishery development department, said, “To almost double the shrimp production, we have anticipated its requirements, including working capital, construction of new sites and farms and development funds.” Shrimp production is anticipated to reach 70,000 tonnes in the next Iranian year.

Afrasiabi stated that 60-65% of the costs of the aquaculture and shrimp sector is attributed to feed, adding that the supply of feed is one of the challenges facing the industry. IFO recently announced that Iran’s farmed shrimps export stood at USD150 million since March 21, 2021. Production was  57,800 tonnes of shrimp from 14,034 ha and 75-80% of production was exported to the European, Asian and regional markets. Turkey, Iraq, United Arab Emirates (UAE), China, Spain and France were export destinations of Iran’s farmed shrimp with China and UAE the leading markets. Last August, an IFO official announced that the area under shrimp farming in the country rose 12%.

The largest area under shrimp farming is in Bushehr province (in the southwest of the country) with  6,053 ha, which is 53ha more than the target in the Sixth Five-Year National Development Plan (2016-2021).
