Innovasea, a global leader in technologically advanced aquatic solutions for aquaculture and fish tracking, has been chosen as one of three finalists for the 2022 Discovery Award in Innovation for the development of its tiny V3 fish tracking transmitter. The winner was announced in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
In creating the V3 tag, Innovasea devised a way to make its industry-leading acoustic telemetry technology even smaller while ensuring it had a strong enough battery to power the tags for an extended period of time.
“It’s an honour to be nominated for a Discovery Award for the technology breakthroughs that led to the creation of our V3 tag,†said Mark Jollymore, president of Innovasea. “Innovation is at the heart of what we do at Innovasea, and this nomination is a testament to the many people whose creativity, hard work and long hours brought the V3 from concept to reality.â€
Smaller than a pharmaceutical caplet, the V3 is ideal for noisy freshwater environments like those found around barriers, dams and fish passage systems. It also gives researchers and scientists the ability to study both smaller species of fish and larger species that are at earlier stages of their lifecycle.
The Discovery Awards are in support of the Discovery Centre in Halifax and celebrate outstanding innovators whose game-changing achievements in science and technology put Nova Scotia at the forefront of global innovation.
The Innovation Award is intended to recognize a team or individual who saw the commercial potential of a concept/research and applied innovative business practices, combined with the strategic investment of time and money, to bring it to the market.
The 20th Annual Discovery Awards was awarded on November 23. Innovasea did not win the award but at the Halifax Convention Centre. It said “While our tiny V3 fish tracking transmitter did not claim the big prize, it was an honour being named one of the three finalists.”
