The complete program announced for TARS 2023 – Shrimp Aquaculture: Regeneration

Posted on

With less than a month to go, organisers have announced the complete program for TARS 2023. TARS 2023 gathers stakeholders in the shrimp aquaculture supply chain over two days (August 16-17) at the Westin Resort Nusa Dua. Bali, Indonesia.

This year marks the 12th year for TARS (The Aquaculture Roundtable Series®). Held annually, TARS rotates the focus between aquafeeds, shrimp and finfish aquaculture.

Why Regeneration
Organisers have reiterated that Shrimp Aquaculture: Regeneration comes from a need to proactively improve the culture model, mitigate disease, match nutrition to genetics, focus on sustainability and develop a strategic plan. “Evolving is not enough, regeneration is needed. The Asian shrimp aquaculture industry is stagnating and going nowhere. Meanwhile, demand from the global market is facing headwinds of inflation and a looming recession,” said Zuridah Merican, Editor of Aqua Culture Asia Pacific Magazine.

“Part of the challenge in Asia is how we are losing market share while we see a lack of efficiency due to poor survival rates but there is a larger systemic risk. We need a regeneration of Asia’s shrimp aquaculture.”

She added that here regeneration brings another meaning. “To continue Asia’s industry, we require the next generation to do it. In the program, the average age has dropped. It is a platform for a succession plan and the new generation to tell us about their ideas for the future.”

The industry dialogue on what is holding shrimp aquaculture back is a deep dive with a panel of young stakeholders on how to make shrimp farming sexy and attract a younger generation of shrimp farmers. They will discuss the limitations with current shrimp aquaculture models and the strategy to focus on marketing ahead of production.

Hard Talk
Hard Talk draws, a panel of industry leaders across segments to debate on “What Does it Take to Produce Sustainable Asian Shrimp.”

Black tiger shrimp
Despite the revival in farming, demand for the black tiger shrimp has not met expectations. How can industry improve demand and marketing and target premium markets? The panel will look at how to maintain the resurgence of the black tiger. Manoj M Sharma, Mayank Aquaculture India, will set the scene with his take on challenges, costs of production and marketing black tiger shrimp in India. Regis Bador, Innov’ Aquaculture Sarl will describe commitments required from players for premium markets.

“Ultimately, the resurgence of black tiger farming will be of no use if we fail to understand the market well.” says Manoj M Sharma,

Technical and industry presentations
The session on matching industry needs with precision shrimp nutrition, health, interventions and feed efficiency will be chaired by MMAF’s Romi Novriadi.

  • Ei Lin Ooi, Adisseo will discuss harnessing shrimp health with functional nutrition;
  • Achmad Wahyudi, PT Grobest Indomakmur, will discuss optimised feed and feeding protocols;
  • Chi Man, BASF will present on the potential of feed enzymes;
  • Breaking the mould by Nguyen Ngoc Diem, dsm-firmenich is on mycotoxins.
  • In the session focussing on genetics, hatchery and nursery segments. INVE Aquaculture’s Olivier Decamp will present on “The power of the first 30 days, crafting the foundation for increased farming efficiencies in the genetics.”

The session on future proofing Asia’s shrimp aquaculture, will delve into the following:
• Health and microbiome monitoring • Balancing shrimp farming models with management and carrying capacity • Matching product quality to specific market demand
• Smart feed management• Unleashing LCA for sustainable shrimp aquaculture

Forte of TARS – Interactive Breakout Roundtable Sessions

Asian shrimp aquaculture is highly fragmented. To develop sustainable shrimp, the key is ensuring traceability along the supply chain. Over 1.5 hours, all participants will discuss key issues in promoting traceability supply chain. Their mission is tabulate what metrics are required for traceability, based will then be further discussed at the group level during the panel discussion session.

“TARS is an in-person interactive conference, hence we limit participants to 250 only,” says Merican.
