Union Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Purshottam Rupala launched a shrimp crop insurance scheme developed by Agricultural Insurance Company (AIC) in Navsari Thursday.

“The entrepreneurs of shrimp farming should increase the production so that India, which is the second largest shrimp producer in the world, should take first position. The state and Central governments are all there to support the mission,” Rupala said as he also inaugurated a conclave of shrimp farmers. “Shrimp farming has become an important tool of livelihood for the people of South Gujarat. Shrimp farming is being done on 10,000 hectares of land in Gujarat out of which 80 per cent is owned by the government,” said state BJP president C R Paatil. He urged the government to develop infrastructure for shrimp farmers of South Gujarat. He also suggested that the government should allot land to widows from the region so that they can do shrimp farming or lease the plot to generate monthly revenue.

Elaborating on the scheme, AIC MD and chairman Girja Subramanyam said, “Our shrimp policy is open for black tiger prawn, white leg shrimp, scampi and others. The insurance cover starts from the initial stage to 130 days till the shrimps are ready.”
