50 Years of WorldFish – Its story of legacy, global impact and way forward

WorldFish’s 50th anniversary commemorative book traces big moments in its journey since 1975 that have defined the evolution of fisheries and aquaculture into aquatic food systems that we practice today – its legacy to the world of sustainable development.

This beautifully curated coffee table book is not just a reflection of the past. It also shares its vision for the future of aquatic foods at the intersection of climate crisis, malnutrition and poverty alleviation and partnerships fit for today’s world.

2025 marks the golden jubilee of WorldFish—a milestone celebrating five decades of pioneering aquatic food systems science. Founded in 1975 as ICLARM, the organization has evolved from fisheries research into a global leader in sustainable aquaculture, nutrition-sensitive innovations, and small-scale fisheries empowerment.

Some highlights of the celebration included a commemorative coffee table book titled Fish to Future captures WorldFish’s journey, from the release of GIFT tilapia to its role in shaping global food systems. In Penang, Malaysia, the headquarters of WorldFish there was a Fish4Thought Science Fair Special featuring expert panels, innovation showcases, and reflections on climate-smart aquatic food systems.

  • A new 50th-anniversary logo symbolizes WorldFish’s enduring commitment to biodiversity, equity, and nutrition.
  • The organisation also celebrates 25 years in Malaysia, its headquarters since 2000.

This document, “50 Years of WorldFish: From Fisheries Science to Aquatic Food Systems for Sustainable Development,” celebrates WorldFish’s journey from its origins as ICLARM in 1975 to its current role as a leader in aquatic food systems. This highlights the organization’s evolution from focusing solely on fisheries science to embracing a holistic approach that includes aquaculture, value chains, socio-economic dimensions, and environmental aspects of aquatic food production.

The publication showcases key achievements such as the development of influential tools like ELEFAN and Ecopath, and the creation of FishBase, the world’s most comprehensive database of fish species. It also emphasizes WorldFish’s commitment to bridging the gap between science and development, empowering small-scale fisheries, integrating gender into research, and addressing global challenges like climate change and food insecurity through sustainable aquatic food systems.
