Next Global Shrimp Forum publication release: 100% shrimp: Full Utilisation

Posted on

The Global Shrimp Forum Foundation has announced the launch of a new report, 100% Shrimp: Full Utilisation, financed through the financial surplus generated by the 2024 Global Shrimp Forum.

The report explores the opportunities to better utilise waste material from shrimp processing, highlighting how by-products can be transformed into valuable inputs for food, feed, nutraceuticals and other applications. By focusing on full utilisation, the report aims to support greater efficiency, sustainability and value creation across the global shrimp industry.

Authored by long-time Global Shrimp Forum collaborator Melanie Siggs, 100% Shrimp: Full Utilisation was developed in conjunction with Kontali and a small group of technical expert advisors, bringing together market insight and practical expertise from across the value chain, alongside extensive desk research and the years of knowledge gleaned from Melanie’s experience in both the industry and academia.

Willem van der Pijl, Managing Director of the Global Shrimp Forum, said the report demonstrates how the Forum’s impact extends beyond its annual event.

“The Global Shrimp Forum was created to drive collaboration and progress within the shrimp industry, and this report is a tangible example of that mission in action. By reinvesting the Forum’s surplus into independent research, we are able to support practical initiatives that help the industry address challenges and unlock new opportunities.”

He added that full utilisation of shrimp resources is becoming increasingly important as the industry looks to improve sustainability and profitability simultaneously.

Report author Melanie Siggs said the project reflects the project reflects growing interest in maximizing the value of shrimp processing through adoption of a 100% Shrimp model.

“There is untapped potential in the value of this residual material which is often seen as waste and a burden to the business ,”

Siggs said.

“This report brings together technical knowledge, market perspectives and real-world examples to show how full utilization can benefit processors, producers and the wider industry – and other sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals and packaging . I’m grateful to Willem and the rest of the board for entrusting me with this project, I hope it proves to be a useful resource to catalyze new thinking.”

100% Shrimp: Full Utilisation is intended as a starting point; an invitation to explore the opportunities of “100% Shrimp”. It is not a scientific manual, but rather a document designed to inspire. Realising this opportunity will require further research, collaboration, and investment.

Both the author and the steering committee members stand ready to support those who wish to advance this agenda.

The report is available through the Global Shrimp Forum website
