Cage aquaculture, particularly offshore cage aquaculture, is an important model in the field of aquaculture. With the increasing emphasis on environmental conservation, offshore cage aquaculture is expected to be a significant direction for future aquaculture development. It serves as a crucial means to ensure the supply of high-quality aquatic protein for human consumption. To promote networking and collaboration among stakeholders involved in fisheries and aquaculture production, research, and development across Asian countries, the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS), Hainan University (HNU), Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), China-ASEAN ‘The Belt and Road’ Joint Laboratory of Mariculture Technology, and the Center for Ecological Aquaculture (CEA) will jointly host the 7 th International Symposium on Cage Aquaculture in Asia (CAA7) in Haikou, Hainan of China from November 29-December 2, 2023.
Hainan, located in a tropical region of China and surrounded by the South China Sea, possesses unique advantages and conditions for the development of offshore cage aquaculture and other forms of cage aquaculture. It has a marine area of 2 million km2 and has been at the forefront of deep-sea cage aquaculture in China. Hainan’s achievements in the field of cage aquaculture have garnered significant attention both domestically and internationally. Additionally, HNU has made remarkable progress in the areas of fisheries and aquaculture. Currently, Hainan Province is actively developing the world’s largest free trade port and has implemented a visa-free entry policy for delegates from 59 countries. This policy greatly facilitates attendance at conferences and ensures convenience for participants.
The AFS aims to promote networking and cooperation among scientists, technicians, and all stakeholders involved in fisheries and aquaculture production, research, and development in the Asian region. The CAA7, jointly organized by AFS, HNU, and other co-organizers and sponsors, seeks to summarize the current status and experiences of cage aquaculture in Asia and worldwide. It will also address the challenges and future areas of development and direction. The symposium aims to facilitate the upgrading and healthy rapid development of the cage aquaculture industry in Asia.
The symposium will feature presentations by representatives from China, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Australia, and other Asian countries and areas. Organisers invite deans, experts, young scholars, representatives of aquaculture production-related enterprises, as well as doctoral and master’s students from relevant institutions specializing in cage aquaculture in China and other Asian countries to attend the symposium.
