Now in its 13th year, The Aquaculture Roundtable Series® (TARS), a stakeholder gathering to equip industry with the next phase of growth, will focus on Asia’s Finfish Aquaculture industry in 2024. Past TARS on finfish aquaculture in 2013 and 2017 have looked at developing growth strategies and industrialisation.
Commercial Asian finfish aquaculture has been associated with lower value species such as the tilapia and pangasius while there is no significant marine fish species. This industry has lagged its temperate species peers in the past decade. Why is that and what is holding it back?
• Has supply exceeded demand or are we poor in branding, marketing and sustainability?
• We seem to be able to supply the high value niche markets with live fish and the mass market with low value frozen fish. Which species do we have for the mid-value export markets?
• Are we producing too many marine species such that we lack economies of scale or focus?
• Do we have sufficient funding for development of the fry, feed and post-harvest segments or is the ROI uninteresting?
• What are the catalysts for investment and innovation and where are the strategies for growth? Can we learn from the salmon and Mediterranean seabass & bream industries?
TARS 2024 –Steering an Industry into Focus offers the opportunity for all stakeholders in Asia to discuss these challenges and come together to develop solutions. It will offer expert analysis, business models, technology, innovations and state- of- the-art- biotechnology along the entire supply chain – from genetics, production to markets.
Similar to previous TARS programs, there will be plenary presentations by industry experts, interactive roundtable breakout sessions and panels, industry dialogue and hard talk with business leaders. Participation is limited to 250 to facilitate networking opportunities.
About TARS
The Aquaculture Roundtable Series® (TARS) initiated in 2011 is a stakeholder-driven effort to facilitate the sharing and exchange of information and experiences for a common goal, to equip the industry with the next phase of growth. It is a platform for all – public, private sector, academia, government and non-government organizations to share new knowledge, deliberate on critical issues, and identify strategies for improvement – to ensure a sustainable aquaculture industry for the next generation.
TARS is designed as a series of roundtable sessions to focus on specific sectors of the industry in Asia. Over the past 12 years, TARS covered the following sectors: Aquafeeds in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2022; Shrimp Aquaculture in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021 & 2023; and Finfish Aquaculture in 2013 & 2017.
TARS 2023 on Shrimp Aquaculture: Regeneration was a very successful conference, gathering 250 stakeholders in the shrimp aquaculture industry. It was held in August in Bali Indonesia.
