  • Precision shrimp aquaculture as the pathway to building efficiency for a sustainable industry
  • A deep dive into the China market as consumer confidence has dropped and a look into the local supply chain
  • Next generation farmers redefine the industry’s future with strategies for consistent success rates

The Aquaculture Roundtable Series® (TARS) 2025 on Shrimp Aquaculture will focus on precision farming, productivity, and profitability. The organizers have announced the preliminary program along with the list of speakers and panellists. The conference is scheduled for August 20-21, 2025, in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The State of Demand and Supply

Zuridah Merican, Chair, TARS 2025 said,

“At each TARS, we assess industry challenges. This year, we update on shrimp supply from Asia and Latin America, and demand from China, the leading market and success stories. The current oversupply and low prices threaten sustainability of many Asian farms due to production costs and disease, but some have had consistent success.”

On August 20, Robin McIntosh of Charoen Pokphand Foods will discuss supply trends in Asia and challenges facing producers. He will examine if the Asian intensive model, which once dominated global shrimp production with genetically improved Penaeus vannamei before AHPND, is now broken or misapplied in current farming practices.

Ding Changwei, Hong Kong Fisheries Holdings Limited will show how China’s food service demand is changing and how online retail has grown tremendously to nearly 60% share, but branding and product recognition is critical. The market is not homogenous – it accepts many shrimp product types but consumer confidence has dropped although prices for the consumer have remained stable. 2025 is a correction year while 2026 will see growth in consumption again.

Pablo Montalbetti GT, Vitapro-Alicorp will highlight Ecuador’s model and its ability to respond quickly to market shifts. He will explore the strategic combination of natural, industrial, and technological advantages that drive its competitiveness. He will provide a SWOT analysis and brief discussion on rising shrimp production in other countries in Latin America.

TARS will showcase the transformation led by second generation Thai farmers, Yanisa Klomsuwan and Khemika Klomsuwan at their father’s farming business in Krabi. This is moving from conventional practises to a structured, data-driven approach – implementing a new farming model aimed at reducing grow-out cycle days, increasing average daily gain (ADG), and achieving higher yields.

Precision Shrimp Aquaculture as the Pathway to Building a Sustainable Industry

The TARS format has continuously evolved to meet industry needs and deliver a more engaging, interactive experience. The program throughout the two-day meeting revolves around precision shrimp aquaculture as the pathway to building a sustainable industry, models to transform the sector while enhancing productivity and restoring profitability.

  • Precision Shrimp aquaculture & Gap Analyses covers weak links at genetics, hatchery and nursery and planning farming models to nutrition and feed management, synergistic for farming efficiency.
  • Living with Diseases is prevention, managing trigger points for current disease challenges (TPD, EHP, WSSV and AHPND).
  • Future Proofing Shrimp Aquaculture is important to ensure continuity with sustainability and preparedness for market demand from the consumer up.
  • Technology and Innovations show technology adoption to improve efficiency and productivity.

The Pondside Chat (Industry Dialogue 2025) brings together a dynamic group of next-generation farmers from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, and the Philippines to redefine the future of the industry. Each will share perspectives on the transformation taking place on their farms.

In the Hard Talk with Business Leaders, industry representing Genetics, Hatchery & Nursery; Feeds (Asia and Latin America); Farm Production, and Processing & Marketing segments will discuss effective supply chain management and the shrimp aquaculture dysfunction, where each segment operates independently.

TARS will feature 40 speakers and industry panellists. For details on confirmed speakers, go to https://tarsaquaculture.com/speakers/

Interactive Roundtable Breakout Sessions

On August 21, all participants will gather for the Interactive Roundtable Breakout Sessions. They will discuss “Future Proofing: Precision Shrimp Aquaculture and the New Deal.” A forte of TARS, we get stakeholders as a group, to collaboratively build solutions from the ground up. This is our proposition where every participant has a voice in the future of the industry.

TARS 2025 is organized by Aqua Culture Asia Pacific and Corporate Media Services PL, with support from the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Thailand. We extend our sincere gratitude to our sponsors and industry partners: dsm-firmenich, USGC, Jefo Nutrition, Auranta, Adisseo, ADM, SyAqua, Alltech and BioMar.
