Moving aquaculture from an art to a science is the responsibility of all stakeholders and AQUA CULTURE Asia Pacific will be the platform for information exchange

Marine Shrimp

International prices have improved but supply still exceeds demand. Feed prices have eased allowing farmers to recover some margins. However, survival rates are still low due to diseases. The industry must invest in productivity, sustainability and marketing to give itself a competitive advantage. The Asian model requires transformation to fuel its next phase of growth. The value chain must work better together to supply quality shrimp.

We publish industry reviews on marine shrimp in Jan/Feb and Sept/Oct

Marine Fish

Asian aquaculture needs a third pillar, namely, the marine fish sector, but it must concentrate its resources on one species. The Asian seabass has potential but needs an integrated supply chain supported by genetics, hatchery-nursery systems, feed production, and processing. Meeting retail market demand will require the farming of larger fish suitable for processing. Disease continues to be a significant issue but vaccination rates remain low.

We publish an industry review on marine fish in the Mar/Aptil edition

Freshwater Fish

The tilapia sector produces small fish for local markets and larger fish for export. Challenges vary with diseases and value adding for the respective markets. The pangasius sector is reviewing its supply chain to enhance production efficiency and develop co-products to improve return on investment. New producers are expected to increase competition, and areas such as marketing, branding, and sustainability could influence competitive positioning.

The Industry review on Tilapia will be in the July/August issue and that on general Freshwater Fish, including Pangasius and Tilapia will be in Nov/Dec edition

Aquafeeds

Fishmeal and plant protein ingredient prices have eased creating tailwinds. Headwinds come from lower feed demand which has intensified competition among companies. Investing in sustainable feed may raise costs and initially create an uneven playing field. However, industry is advancing with smart feeding, precision nutrition, digestibility, R&D for marine fish, functional feeds for disease interventions and developing nursery and bespoke feeds along the life cycle.

Our industry review on Aquafeeds is in the May/Jun edition
